I7, GT 650M SLI
850$ before B&N / Students discount – don’t forget it.
With the new GT 750M GDDR5 GPU, I7-3630QM, 8GB DDR3, 1TB HDD and a glossy 1080p. In terms of performance, it is the same as the Y580, only with a GT 650M GDDR5.
For 800$, the Y500 offers a very good value for your money, with good 1080p screen (same as the Y580), good sound, very good gaming performance with the I7 and GT 750M and currently it is the fastest under 850$ including Windows OS.
You can also get the much-faster-for-gaming Y500 with a dual GT 650Ms GPUs that is sold for practically the same price and gives you much higher gaming performance in most cases.

I wan’t to know if the issues on gtx 650m sli still persists on the new gt 750m?
Also, noticed that the y580 has been removed on the lenovo website…wonder what will be the predecessor of y500? Hope that i could have an info before i bought a new laptop.
I’m not sure there will be a predecessor for the Y580. Maybe a more high end laptop.
Which SLI problems?
How good is lenovo in terms of durability? Thermals?
The Y500 SLI thermals are ok. The temps can get very high under extreme conditions, but when playing it should be ok without throttling problems (CPU/GPU are automatically underclocked to cool the system down). I wouldn’t worry too much and in the worst case I’d get a cooling pad ( but I don’t think you’ll need it almost at all)
The build quality is good.
couldn’t find the gt 750m benchmark, someone help pls
There are some users benchmarks:

looks right at the performance spot we’ve expected compared to the GT 650M and 660M
@junky: the price has just increased. Should I wait for a new coupon junky.
This is a highly reviewed laptop but I have real concerns about driver support for dual mobile GPUs. I own a Lenovo laptop with “hybrid crossfire”, these unconventional setups won’t use the standard nVidia or amd drivers, and lenovo never releases graphics updates. I wonder if SLI will even work with most games in the future. Am I off base with this?
What exact model do you have?
I really don’t think so. You can use Nvidia drivers and software and it work – Nvidia and now also AMD release unified drivers for their mobile products. You don’t need specific brand drivers. As drivers get more and more updated, the SLI should perform better, actually
FYI, the addon GPU (“GN36″) is back up to $230 again. Makes me wish I had pulled the trigger a few weeks ago — for a while it was possible to get the top of the line (i7, 16GB, mSATA SSD, Blu-ray + SLI) for 1200 shipped! Oh well, I can do without the blu-ray….
If you add the second gpu in separately it comes out to be about 970 which is cheaper than the other offers on Amazon and newegg which are at about 1025-1050 with it already installed
Thanks! it was 230$ just a day ago! I’ll update
Btw Newegg has the the i5 3230m Y500 dual 650m SLI for $899.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312438
i7 3630QM Y500 dual 650m SLI for $1049.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312439
The MSI GX60 is still probably the stronger option than the i7 Y500 dual 650m SLI at the $1,100 price point.
However, the i5 Y500 dual 650m SLI has surpassed Lenovo’s own I7 Y580 660m at the $900 price point. That’s 670mx gpu performance with a slight dropoff in cpu power under $1,000!!!
thanks for the commment. Yes, I’ve seen the link, but I didn’t think it is really a dual GPU configuration but a dual GPU option. Are you sure it’s a dual GPU configuration? for 900$ doesn’t sound to me reasonable as Lenovo never done such a thing – this is a too good deal. Do you have confirmation that this is actually include two GT 650Ms?
The Y500 with dual GPU configuration can easily be a GX60 competitor.
Amazon actually has the i7 y500 dual 650m SLI $25 cheaper than newegg at $1,024.99

This is the review for the y500 on notebookcheck confirming dual 650m SLI configuration.

I am really torn now, I was about to jump on the MSI GX60 $1,100 but not having to deal with questions about cpu intensive games as well as the underutilization for the 7970m with enduro and their suspect drivers is a strong consideration in giving up a little gpu performance.
The Enduro is ok now and it is hard to compare them. Do you have any specific game you wish to play?
OK, we got confirmation (the review itself doesn’t tell us what is the specific model they’ve checked):

While I am encouraged that both newegg and amazon show the y500 with the dual 650m SLI, I am still a little skeptical myself since I can’t find this configuration on Lenovo’s main site.
these are not Lenovo standard models. These are retailer models. You can send it back if it isn’t the right model, no?
it is still unclear to me if the 900$ Y500 has dual GPU too – it’s just too strange. If it has, you can take it and add some good SSD and I think it will be a better deal than the GX60
Yes, according to the reviews from people who have purchased this laptop, it does indeed come with 2 gtx 650m’s in sli, and a backlit keyboard. I don’t even have the money to get a $700 laptop, but this deal is really catching my eye, as it is very good. The only catch is the i5, only 6g of ram, and a 5400 rpm platter drive. Also, there have been complaints as the the sturdiness of the touchpad. But if used for gaming (duh), the touchpad won’t see the light of day.
Yes, already posted it after getting a reply from a purchaser on Amazon (you can see the discussion there):

The I7 Y500 is a good catch too, compared to current laptops. I’d go with the I5 version though.
Does anyone know how long this coupon is going to last?? I will need 2 weeks at the most to save money for the $850..
1. for the last month it was more or less on all the time
2. I think they have some kind of financing option
I ended up looking up the coupon. Apparently, it expires on the 21st, which will probably be too early for me. Are coupons of this value common, especially for the Y500?
they should be. I guess you won’t have a problem finding another such coupon
