Lenovo Y480. Available from

This is the older Y480 version with the GT 640M LE GPU. You can now buy it for 560$ and get a super high gaming performance for you money and generally a good laptop.

So far, I’d say AVOID THIS DEAL.

    I’m typing on the laptop I purchased from Newegg – the Y480 “2930-XB2″ and it has a 1GB GT 640M LE. I didn’t want that, I wanted the 650M 2GB.

#PissedConsumer , this was my entire student account refund

I’m trying to upgrade from an Alienware M11X (1st gen) and this seems like a pretty good deal. The 14″ screen really seems to be my ideal size, but I’m still trying to decide whether it would be a significant upgrade. I looked at the Y580 models for a while too, but they really haven’t had any deals close to my range lately (sub $800). I have a couple questions about this model comparatively though:

    1. Would the i5 processor be a significant jump over my Alienware for the cost? Or am I better just waiting until another laptop floats into this price range? Is the lack of i7 processor a dealbreaker for mainly game use?

    2. What kind of game settings am I looking at for this configuration? I don’t plan to play too many high end releases (prefer my consoles for that), unless it is a PC exclusive. The games I’m most interested in coming up are the Starcraft 2 Expansion, Sim City, and Company of Heroes 2. Maybe a few other smaller games like Fortnite, the Amnesia sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2, etc. Would this offer me a significant bump up over the Alienware M11X?

      Hi

What are the specs? SU7300 and GT 335M?

      1. The I5 is a jump and the GT 650M is way faster than the 335M. For gaming, the Y480 is a much better choice. I7 should not be a dealbreaker for gaming – don’t be bothered by it.

      2. Yes. SC2 on highest settings, for example. The GT 650M should, roughly, more than twice faster than the 335M with the I5.

      3. However, you have more options under 800$ – they won’t be faster, but some will have a nice 1080p screen. Do you have an external one?

      4. Another option is the Clevo-based 11.6″ laptops, like the NP6110 at XoticPC, but it doesn’t have any advantage over this one

        Yep, SU7300 and GT 335M.

After reading some of the bad news from the comments above, I’ll probably hold off on this one.

Overall, I’m looking for a laptop that can run the games I mentioned above, and every once in a while a higher end game, even if its not top of the run specs. I would prefer one to be between 13″ and 15″, and I actually would prefer the full HD screen like you mentioned since I’ll be using it for a lot more than just gaming.

What do you think I should look into?

You have several options, depends on your preferences:

          1. The Asus N56DP – although not the highest gaming performance for the money, you get a good keyboard and a cool & quiet laptop and a matte 1080p screen.

          2. However, for a much higher gaming performance + nice 1080p screen (glossy), you can get the Y500 for 830$:

The price difference is small and the question is whether you want a cooler and quieter laptop or a more high performance one. The Y500 has a good sound and a backlit keyboard as well.
          This would be my choice
